How to Help Our Fellow Texans in the Aftermath of Hurricane Harvey

Dear DRC Friends,

As you all know, the southeast Texas coast is in the midst of a disaster situation caused by Hurricane Harvey, a Category 4 storm which made landfall on Friday. So far, the storm is responsible for destroying homes, overturning vehicles and sinking boats, severing power lines, and forcing tens of thousands of residents to flee.

While Harvey has now been downgraded to a tropical storm, it is still lingering over Texas and producing record amounts of rain — which could spawn even more destruction in the form of catastrophic flooding.

Many of our members and others in the community have contacted us, asking how to support our fellow Texans during this time of great need.

We are honored to recommend the following organizations that we are working closely with to provide assistance, in both the immediate term and longer horizon, as the effects of this storm will be felt for months and perhaps years to come.

IMMEDIATE RELIEF EFFORTS

The City of Dallas has created a website with details on how to make financial contributions to partner organizations such as the Red Cross, donate items of greatest demand, and ways to volunteer in ongoing relief efforts.

For additional information, please visit: DallasHelpForHarvey.

LONG-TERM RELIEF EFFORTS

The United Way of Metropolitan Dallas has set up the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to support the immediate and ongoing relief efforts we know will have to last for months. All of the proceeds contributed to this fund — 100% — will be distributed to nonprofits supporting those affected by the storms who are seeking shelter and long-term assistance in North Texas.

The United Way is in close contact with their partners in the affected areas to assess the immediate and long-term needs regarding volunteers and donations. We will provide updates as we know more, but at this time all partners have indicated that donating dollars is the most useful action until the full scope of the needs are known and response teams are better able to travel into the affected areas.

If you receive any inquiries about Hurricane Harvey relief, please contact Jennifer Sampson, CEO and President of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, at Jsampson@unitedwaydallas.org or 214.978.0004.

+++

Finally, to all with family and friends living in the Houston area who are affected by this disaster, we extend our thoughts and prayers to you and your loved ones. Along with our hearts we also want to extend our hands, and we are here to help in any way. Please let me know if there are other ways we can be of assistance. I can be reached on email at CEO@dallaschamber.org, and by phone at 214.746.6611.

All best wishes,

West Nile Alert: DCHHS reports 15th human case of West Nile Virus

West Nile Alert: DCHHS reports 15th human case of West Nile Virus

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting the 15th human case of West Nile virus infection in Dallas County for the year 2017. The 15th case is a resident of the 75240 zip code of Dallas who was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information.

“Our mosquito surveillance program and the county and municipal abatement teams are taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our residents. However, it is important for residents to take the necessary precautions,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director.

The best way to avoid exposure to West Nile Virus is to avoid mosquito bites. Residents should use the 4Ds to reduce their risk:
DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellents that contain DEET or other EPA approved repellents and follow instructions.
Dress: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing outside.
Drain: Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace.
Dusk & Dawn: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

“Since there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatments for WNV infection, residents should adhere to preventive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director/health authority.

Indeed – Among the 15 largest metros, Dallas ranks #3 for highestsalaries after adjusting for the cost of living.

When looking at jobs in different local markets, a dollar is not always a dollar-and sometimes it isn’t even a dollar. Paychecks go further where housing and other costs are lower. This is the dilemma job seekers face: The places with the highest salaries also have the highest cost of living.

Dallas Urban Heat Island Effect report released by Texas Trees Foundation

Dallas Skyline Trinity | City of Dallas

Dallas is hot, and getting hotter. The Texas Trees Foundation’s findings in the 2017 Dallas Urban Heat Island Effect report show how cities affect heat waves. Surfaces like rooftops, parking lots and streets make up 35 percent of the city. In urban areas, these retain heat, making the area up to 15 degrees warmer than in rural areas. The Foundation’s study revealed Dallas County is heating up quickly, and that planting trees can help reduce the heat and improve the health of community members.

Rising temperatures can impact public health. The hottest areas of Dallas had an average high of 101 degrees and an average low of 80 for five months of the year. Dallas County heat-related deaths peaked in 2011 at 52.

The Texas Trees Foundation recommends planting trees as part of a strategy to reduce the impact of cities on the climate, and help prevent the heat island effect from raising temperatures. Planting trees in the hottest areas with high-density residential buildings reduced deaths by more than 20 percent, through lowering the temperature.

The full report is available here.

  • Drivers should slow down and watch for children crossing the street in a school zone
  • Students riding a bike to school should always wear a helmet and ride on the right side in the same direction as traffic is going
  • Parents should teach their children not to dart between parked cars, to wait on the curb for the bus to arrive, and only cross at intersections
  • In the car, children should be in car seats or booster seats until the seat belt fits properly

Schools in the Dallas Independent School District start on August 28.

Nearly 40% of Dallas residents speak a language other than English, and another 24% lack a high school diploma. These classes help learners become more integrated to the communities in which they live.

Because of the success of the partnership between Dallas Public Library and Atmos Energy, Atmos has committed to supporting a literacy center at the Bachman Lake Branch Library where ESL and GED instruction are offered. Citizenship classes and job search assistance will be offered there as well, to help learners take their next steps when classes are over.

FY 2017-18 proposed City budget: Customer service a top priority

FY 2017-18 proposed City budget: Customer service a top priority

Each year, the city manager presents the City of Dallas budget and allows citizens to weigh in on how their tax dollars are spent. The City is putting service first: a commitment to provide residents with the support and service they deserve, 365 days a year.

For FY 2017-18, more than $3 billion has been budgeted to deliver effective and efficient service. This budget was created with valuable feedback residents gave at town hall meetings in March 2017. The City Council determined six strategic priorities for the City: public safety; mobility solutions, infrastructure and sustainability; economic and neighborhood vitality; human and social needs; quality of life; and government performance and financial management.

Click to view the FY 2017-18 Budget

Expanded library hours, new district offices for council members to meet with their constituents, and placing 3-1-1 agents in community centers to better serve residents are just a few customer service enhancements coming in FY 2017-18.

Citizens of Dallas have two options to provide feedback on the City Manager’s FY 2017-18 budget.

Options to submit feedback:

  1. Attend any Budget Town Hall Meetings in your Council District, OR
  2. Participate in a Virtual Budget Town Hall Meeting via your home computer, mobile device, or telephone. (HTML5 required)

West Nile Virus Alert: fifth human case of West Nile Virus reported

West Nile Virus Alert: fifth human case of West Nile Virus reported

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting the fifth human case of West Nile Virus infection in Dallas County for the year 2017. The case is a resident of the 75243 zip code of Dallas. The patient was diagnosed with West Nile fever. DCHHS is awaiting confirmation of the case from the Texas Department of State Health Services.
For more information on mosquito prevention, go to:

Park Department breaks ground on new aquatic center

Dallas Park and Recreation department is starting the first phase of its aquatics master plan with the Crawford Family Aquatic Center.

The groundbreaking will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5 at Crawford Memorial Park Ceremonial.

“These family centers are long-awaited additions to the city’s aquatics program,” said Willis C. Winters, Dallas Park and Recreation director. “We are focused on offering residents and visitors unique water experiences in a modern facility that will exceed their recreational and leisure expectations.”

As part of the 2015 aquatic master plan, the Crawford park facility signals a new focus from the park department. These family aquatic centers will have a more resort atmosphere, complete with a multilevel children’s splash pool, an eight-lane lap pool, and slides containing a plunge pool.

For more information on this and other Park and Recreation initiatives, visit their website.

Dallas Love Field features art created by youth in Dallas County Juvenile Detention

Youth in Dallas County Juvenile Detention have created art pieces to display at the Art Travelers Art Gallery at Dallas Love Field Airport. “All I See is Beauty” showcases the artistic talent of young people in art classes at the detention center. The youth in the program produced more than 100 canvases and five murals.

The classes are taught by local working artists and is the first time some of the youth have been exposed to art. The paintbrush, canvas and paint have a become a pathway to see and express the beauty of life for youth.

Travelers and visitors to Love Field can view the exhibit until mid-October.

#DallasStrong film tells stories of those involved in July 7 tragedy

The City of Dallas Public Information Office and the Dallas Police Department Media Relations Unit teamed up to create a documentary video about the July 7th tragedy. This video provided an outlet for several of the officers involved in the incident and the family members of the fallen to speak out and tell their stories. We know that we were only able to scratch the surface with these interviews since the case still has not gone to the grand jury, but the hope is that the video will provide some healing and closure to those who watch. The video was played for the family members of the fallen after the memorial service on July 7, 2017 and it is now being released to the public.

“You are missed. You are loved. You will never be forgotten.” – Sgt.Gunter
