No change to Dallas bulk and brush collection

No change to Dallas bulk and brush collection

Today, the Dallas City Council approved a mutual aid agreement that would allow Dallas to send equipment and personnel to help the City of Houston with Hurricane Harvey cleanup efforts, if needed. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, Houston asked Dallas if they could provide such assistance. Dallas quickly organized a multi-department response team, with equipment and resources for such an effort. Yesterday, the City of Houston reported they were making meaningful progress in their Hurricane Harvey debris removal efforts and did not need the City of Dallas’ assistance at this time. As a result, proposed changes to large waste (brush and bulky) collection service in the City of Dallas are not needed at this time

Under the mutual aid agreement approved today, the City of Dallas was prepared to commit approximately 35 percent of its Sanitation Services large waste (brush and bulky) collections teams to the City of Houston. If those collection teams had been deployed, Dallas would have asked residents to voluntarily make changes to the type and amounts of debris set out for monthly bulk and brush collection. Those voluntary changes are not needed now.

“Today’s action by the Dallas City Council allows us to be there if Houston needs us,” said Dallas Sanitation Services director Kelly High. “But it’s good to hear they don’t, because that means Houston is making important progress. And that’s a good thing.”

For more information about Sanitation services and collections schedules for Dallas customers, download the Dallas Sanitation app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

Mega shelter evacuees to transition to smaller shelters

Mega shelter evacuees to transition to smaller shelters

The City of Dallas will close the Dallas Convention Center mega shelter and house the remaining evacuees in smaller shelters in Tommie Allen and Samuell Grand Recreation Centers.

The unexpected arrival of additional evacuees this afternoon from area hotels, many of whom had FEMA housing vouchers about to expire, exceeded the capacity at Tommy Allen Recreation Center. So, an overflow shelter for approximately 100 guests will also open at the Samuell Grand Recreation Center.

“This late development was unexpected,” said Office of Emergency Management Director Rocky Vaz. “We had hoped that we could consolidate into just one smaller shelter, but as the numbers increased and exceeded our capacity at Tommie Allen, we needed to take steps to accommodate all our guests. We will continue to work to ensure that everyone is comfortable and taken care of,” he said

As evacuees staying in local hotels learned of plans to close the mega shelter, many of them also signed up for Tommie Allen. As many of these individuals had FEMA hotel vouchers, they were concerned about getting them renewed and opted to come to the shelter.

The closure of the mega shelter and consolidation will dramatically reduce the amount of resources needed by the city to take care of its remaining guests.

West Nile Alert: DCHHS Reports 19th Human Case of West Nile Virus

West Nile Alert: DCHHS Reports 19th Human Case of West Nile Virus

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) is reporting the 19th human case of West Nile Virus infection in Dallas County for the year 2017. The case is a resident of the 75229 zip code of Dallas. The patient was diagnosed with West Nile neuroinvasive disease. For medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons, DCHHS does not provide additional identifying information.

“Our mosquito surveillance program and the county and municipal abatement teams are taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our residents. However, it is important for residents to take the necessary precautions,” said Zachary Thompson, DCHHS director.

The best way to avoid exposure to West Nile Virus is to avoid mosquito bites. Residents should use the 4Ds to reduce their risk:
DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellents that contain DEET or other EPA approved repellents and follow instructions.
Dress: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing outside.
Drain: Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace.
• Dusk & Dawn: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

“Since there is no vaccine or specific antiviral treatments for WNV infection, residents should adhere to preventive measures to protect themselves and their loved ones,” said Dr. Christopher Perkins, DCHHS medical director/health authority.

Dallas Shelters To Observe Day of Prayer

Dallas Shelters To Observe Day of Prayer

President Donald Trump and Texas Governor Greg Abbott have declared Sunday, September 3rd as a Day of Prayer. The City of Dallas, in partnership with the Red Cross and the Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) Spiritual & Emotional Care team, will coordinate interfaith Sunday services at each of the Dallas shelters for displaced families who wish to attend. Services will be held in English at 10 a.m. Following lunch, services will be held in Spanish at 2 p.m.

These services are not open to the public.

VOAD organizations facilitate spiritual and emotional care services in Dallas shelters to provide disaster care and counseling. To serve with the VOAD Spiritual Care team, faith-based member organizations must complete training on several topics, including trauma counseling and disaster care. Faith-based organizations who are registered and trained may be activated to serve in a shelter, as needed for disaster care and counseling.  To learn more, visit dallascountyvoad.org.
