State of the art playground coming to Flag Pole Hill

State of the art playground coming to Flag Pole Hill

Flag Pole Hill is getting a new addition that all families will be able to enjoy. The layout of the newly re-designed playground focuses on all-inclusive elements designed to accommodate children on the Autism spectrum for alone play, as well as elements that address mobility issues for caregivers, like grandparents and older adults.

“The mosaic of different surfaces and textures encourages children of different ages to play with each other, encouraging learning and cooperation,” said Park Board Vice President Robb Stewart.

Additionally, parts of the playground will be constructed beneath trees to provide shade on hot summer days.

Construction and design of the Flag Pole Hill playground will be paid for through a combination of 2017 Bond Funds and thoughtful gifts from the Jordan Spieth Family Foundation, Lake Highlands Junior Women’s League, Lake Highlands Exchange Club, Lake Highlands Women’s League, For The Love of the Lake nonprofit.

“We are thrilled with the public support of our parks shown in voting in favor of the 2017 November bond,” says Dallas City Councilmember Adam McGough, “as well as the generosity and dedication of our local nonprofits to making sure Dallas and especially Lake Highlands is a wonderful place to live”

The Flag Pole Hill playground project is expected to be completed in Fall 2018, at an approximate cost of $750,000.

Notes: Flag Pole Hill is a 107.1-acre metropolitan park, established in 1929. It includes natural and developed area for a variety of outdoor recreation activities such as ball fields, playgrounds, boating, fishing, swimming, picnicking, and trail systems.

Recycling gets easier for Dallas apartment residents

Recycling gets easier for Dallas apartment residents

Recycling is much more accessible for Dallas residents thanks to a major vote by the Dallas City Council.

On June 13, City Council members unanimously voted to approve a Multifamily Recycling Ordinance. This vote will bring the city closer to achieving the steps outlined in its Zero Waste Plan.

The ordinance, effective January 1, 2020, will require apartment complexes with 8 or more units to provide recycling containers to residents within visible distance of garbage containers.

Recycling options include dumpsters, bins, chutes, or valet recycling services, but must allow for a recycling capacity equivalent to 11 gallons, per unit, per week. Waivers and extensions may be allowed if they are approved by the director of Sanitation Services or director’s designee.

Owners of these multifamily sites will also be responsible for educating tenants on the recycling program implementation, proper recycling programs, and the types of materials accepted. Required materials are to be consistent with single-family residents:

  • Paper
  • Cardboard
  • Plastics #1 – #7
  • Aluminum containers
  • Metal containers
  • Glass

Recycling collection service businesses will submit annual reports beginning 2021 on the recycled materials collected from these multifamily sites by tonnage.

The new mandate is expected to make great strides for the Dallas’ efforts to ensure a greener future since more than half of its residents live in these multifamily complexes.

MLK Center to host Juneteenth celebration

MLK Center to host Juneteenth celebration

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center will host their annual Juneteenth Celebration on Tuesday, June 19 from 3 to 7 p.m. to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.

Recognized by the House of Representatives in 1996 as the “true day of independence for African-Americans in this country,” Juneteenth is a day that marks the freeing of the last slaves in America. Even though President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, news hadn’t reached many regions far south. So, on June 19, 1865, when U.S. Gen. Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, TX with a regiment of Union Army soldiers, he effectively freed the State’s 200,000 slaves. Former slaves began recognizing the date the very next year.

“Juneteenth serves as a historic milestone reminding us of the past, but it is also an opportunity to show pride in all that we have achieved since that time,” Natashia Cooper, Event Services Specialist for the MLK, Jr. Community Center said.

This year’s festivities will include fun and educational games, arts and crafts, free health and HIV testing, live music, spoken word artists, and food vendors. Though many activities are aimed at having wholesome fun, there is always a special focus on health and self-empowerment through education.

“Vendors are here to provide information about social services available within the community, resources for continuing education,” Cooper said. “We want to create an atmosphere of fun for the entire family.”

The Juneteenth celebrations in Dallas go back to the 1930’s in Fair Park, but the meaning of observing this day has remained the same; to acknowledge a major milestone in American history and to encourage a sense of community. It is a testament to the notion that no-one is free until everyone is free.

“Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, which is something we can all celebrate,” Cooper said.
