Dallas Arts Month brings hundreds of thousands to City

Dallas Arts Month brings hundreds of thousands to City

Dallas Arts Month kicked off on Wednesday with a rousing a ceremony featuring Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico and Len Barnett & Percussion Things at City Hall. During his address, Mayor Mike Rawlings reflected on the growth of Dallas Arts Month from year to year.

“Since expanding Dallas Arts Week to Arts Month, we have been able to involve more artists, arts organizations and residents, and offer more events,” Mayor Rawlings said. “Last year, Arts Month saw a significant increase in both events and attendance – nearly 1,500 events with an attendance of over 358,000…I hope that art will not only be seen internationally as one of our hallmarks, but that art will be a stage where this city grows.”

Councilmember Sandy Greyson, chair of the Quality of Life, Arts and Culture Committee agreed.  “Having a vibrant arts and culture scene is essential to enhancing the quality of life in our city,” Councilwoman Greyson said. “We also know that the arts are truly engines of the new economy. That is why the City Council adopted a new Cultural Plan last November to make sure that we as a City are making strategic investments to keep this arts engine firing.”

Dallas Arts Month offers opportunities for people to explore music, theatre, museums, and festivals during the month of April. Mayor Mike Rawlings first established it as Dallas Arts Week six years ago.  Visit DallasArtsMonth.com to see a list of the activities taking place throughout the City.

Text-to-9-1-1 now available in Dallas

Text-to-9-1-1 now available in Dallas

In an emergency, calling 9-1-1 is the first step to contacting first responders. Now, Dallas residents can also send a text message to 9-1-1 – this service can be life-saving for those unable to speak to due to a physical impairment, or someone in a situation where talking could put them in danger.

Here are some simple do’s and don’t’s:

  • Do text in simple English, without abbreviations or slang
  • Do include your location and the type of emergency in the first message
  • Do make sure your phone’s “Location Services” settings are enable to allow 9-1-1 to respond
  • Do not include videos or images, including emojis
  • Do not include 9-1-1 in a group message
  • Do not have settings such as “Do Not Disturb” active, which may prevent 9-1-1 from responding

Texts sent to 9-1-1 may be slow or not possible based on provider coverage. Text-to-9-1-1 is not available in every city. Calling 9-1-1 is still the best and fastest way to receive emergency assistance. Texting or calling 9-1-1 with a prank or false report is a crime, and individuals who misuse the 9-1-1 service can be located.

Dallas Love Field wins concessions award

Dallas Love Field wins concessions award

Dallas Love Field’s concessions program was named the best overall program for medium-hub airports at the recent Airport Experience Awards, formerly known as the Airport Revenue News awards.

The concessions program includes all restaurants and eateries within the terminal, as well as specialty retail shops, shoe shine stands and kiosks. The program is in the process of expanding with new dining options opening within the year.

The concessions honor follows Love Field earning the 2018 Airport Service Quality Award for North American airports serving 15-25 million customers. The Dallas City Council will recognize Love Field for the ASQ Award, which is based on customer surveys, at its March 20 Council meeting.

Dallas Love Field experienced the busiest year in its history in 2018 in terms of passengers. The airport eclipsed 8 million enplaned passengers for the first time and serviced more than 16 million total passengers. DAL was the 31st-busiest airport in the United States, making it the busiest in the medium-hub category.

Love Field tips for Spring Break 2019

Love Field Bags | City of Dallas

As spring break commences next week for Dallas and Dallas-area schools, Dallas Love Field expects heavy travel over the coming weekend and throughout spring break.

Dallas Love Field offers the following tips when traversing the airport. At the airport, visit one of the four information booths – three in the non-secured portion of the terminal and one in the secured portion of the terminal – for additional assistance.

• Arrive at least 90 minutes to two hours prior to your flight to allow for parking, check-in and security screening. Peak hours – especially early morning – will lead to longer wait times.
• All three of DAL’s parking garages are first-come, first-served and are within walking distance to the terminal. Plenty of parking is available for those who wish to drive themselves to the airport.
• Parking Garages A&C are $15/day, Parking Garage B is $9/day. Discounted pricing is available in limited quantities on the roof level of Garages B&C.
• Dallas Love Field’s cell phone lot is located just to the north of the Herb Kelleher Way and Mockingbird Lane intersection and is accessible from Aubrey Avenue. Follow signage to access the lot.
• Drop-off and pick-up for passengers is on the upper level, marked Departures/Arrivals, on the upper roadway of Herb Kelleher Way. The ticketing hall, security checkpoint and baggage claim are on the upper level.
• Passengers using any form of ground transportation, including taxis, for-hire shuttles, transportation network companies and rental car shuttles should proceed to the lower level upon exiting either baggage claim or the terminal.
• Due to limited curb space, dropping off and waiting for arriving passengers on the upper roadway must be done in an efficient manner. Dallas Police will be on-site to control traffic and monitor curb operations.
• Abandoned vehicles or those parked in unauthorized areas will be towed.
• The Route 524 buses connect Love Field and DART’s Inwood/Love Field station. The free shuttle operates every day from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. For schedule and fare information, visit www.DART.org/LoveField.

Over 2,600 Trees distributed at Branch Out Dallas event

Over 2,600 Trees distributed at Branch Out Dallas event

Over 200 volunteers worked with City of Dallas staff to successfully distribute 2,604 trees at the inaugural Branch Out Dallas event on Saturday, March 9. Residents registered in advance to pick up a 5-gallon tree from one of six locations in the city. City staff and volunteers worked together to check-in residents and load trees. By the end of the event, less than 4% of the trees remained!

“It’s rewarding to provide a program like this that lets homeowners pick up an attractive tree for free,” said Terry Lowery, Director, Dallas Water Utilities, “the high rate of participation in this pilot program was phenomenal!”

The types of trees offered included: Shumard Oak, Chinquapin Oak, Cedar Elm, Lacebark Elm, and Redbud.

“The warm reception this program received shows Dallas residents understand the value of trees to the environment, ” said James McGuire, Director, Office of Environmental Quality & Sustainability, “the tree distribution process was organized and efficient, and I’d like to thank all of the volunteers and City departments who made it possible for residents to plant these trees.”

The City is currently evaluating the Branch Out Dallas pilot program to see if it is viable to be offered again to Dallas residents. For more information on City of Dallas services and programs, please visit www.dallascityhall.com or www.greendallas.net.

Dallas Love Field wins top award for airport customer experience

Dallas Love Field wins top award for airport customer experience

Dallas Love Field received the 2018 Airport Service Quality Award for North American airports that service 15 to 25 million passengers per year

The Airport Service Quality program is the world’s leading airport passenger service and bench marking program measuring passengers’ satisfaction across 37 key performance indicators.

“It is an honor to receive any award, but especially an Airport Service Quality Award because it is the opinion of our customers,” Director of Aviation Mark Duebner said.

ACI World facilitates the Airport Service Quality Awards program. To be considered for the award, an airport must have participated in the ASQ Survey every month of the award year. Love Field’s ASQ score led to third-place ranking among North American airports in 2016 and 2017.
