Dallas Animal Services launches $5 foot long special

Dallas Animal Services launches $5 foot long special

During the first week of September, Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is hosting a special adoption event to find homes for pets in need. From September 1 through September 8, all pets that measure 12 inches or longer from nose to tail will have their adoption fee lowered to only $5.

This adoption special is designed to help find forever homes for the highest population groups currently in the shelter – adult cats and medium and large dogs.

DAS is committed to help keep Dallas safe, compassionate and healthy for people and animals. DAS intakes hundreds of animals a day, and relies on adopters, fosters, and rescues to find loving homes for pets in our care. Dallas Animal Shelter is open for adoption from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Sunday and will operate normal hours on Labor Day.

Service Alert: Delays in Sanitation pickup

Service Alert: Delays in Sanitation pickup

Some customers are experiencing late garbage and recycling collection.  The City anticipates some continued delays due to lower than required collection vehicle availability.  This week, residents may experience collection times that are later than normal and in some isolated instance some residents may not receive collection until the following morning.  In the near term, there is increased likelihood of collection delays over the next 90-120 days depending on daily collection vehicle availability.  As new collection vehicles arrive, they will be put into service.

Sanitation will notify 3-1-1 each evening of which areas will be affected by service delays.  Information including the routes, boundaries of affected areas, and estimated collection time the following day will be shared with 3-1-1.  If your garbage or recycling has been missed visit the Sanitation website for more  specific information.

Dallas Public Library’s new pathway welcomes children of all ages

Dallas Public Library’s new pathway welcomes children of all ages

A newly completed pathway is engaging and welcoming young visitors to the Dallas Downtown Library with an array of colorful letter and word designs.

From the west entrance to the plaza, the path is sort of a “game board,” inviting kids to answer questions as they walk towards the front doors, such as “can you count to five?” “how many continents can you name?” and “can you hop like a frog?”

From the east entrance, letters of the alphabet, designed to reflect a word that begins with each letter, are scattered in a random pattern. Visitors are greeted with a large magnifying glass asking them to find the letters of their name. The pathway was created by artist Miguel Donjuan, a member of the Oak Cliff collaborative Sour Grapes, known for their graffiti-style murals. Decoratively wrapped garbage cans, designed by Walter Gray Lamb, reinforce the letter and number recognition encouraged by the pathway.

“Play is an important aspect of learning for young children,” said Youth Services Administrator Melissa Dease. “The design is meant to engage children with early literacy skills, including number and letter knowledge and vocabulary skills as well as encouraging play.”

The letter designs are also being printed in a coloring book to be given to children when they visit the Vital Statistics office with their parents or the Youth Discovery Center on the second floor of the Library.

The project was funded with a Play Everywhere grant from Kaboom! which encourages the transformation of everyday spaces into opportunities for kids to play.
